The SBIR/STTR Resource Center serves as the central hub for Maine’s innovation ecosystem, providing specialized support to entrepreneurs navigating federal funding opportunities. As part of CMGC’s designation as a Federal and State Technology (FAST) organization for Maine, the Resource Center offers comprehensive guidance through complex application processes, delivering targeted technical assistance, and connecting startups with critical resources and partners. Dr. Jones will serve founders across Maine and those participating within Dirigo Labs. Through personalized mentorship, proposal development support, and commercialization planning, the Center significantly enhances Maine companies’ competitiveness for federal R&D funding, ultimately driving technological innovation and economic growth throughout the state.With more than 30 years of expertise in artificial intelligence, cognitive systems, and technology commercialization, Dr. Jones will play a vital role in advancing Maine’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Dr. Jones, an accomplished technology leader, Senior Artificial Intelligence Engineer, and Engineering Supervisor at Soar Technology, LLC, brings extensive experience in federal contracting, research and development, as well as startup experience. Holding a Ph.D. in Information and Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine, he has also served as an Assistant Professor at Colby College.

Competition Showcases Innovation and Entrepreneurial Talent in Downtown Waterville
Waterville, ME 10/16/2024 – The second annual Back of the Napkin Challenge, a dynamic competition aimed at fostering creativity and entrepreneurial thinking among regional college students, will take place on October 17 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Greene Block + Studios in downtown Waterville. Fourteen students from Colby College, Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC), and Thomas College have been selected to present their innovative ideas before a distinguished panel of judges.
The Back of the Napkin Challenge encourages participants to distill their startup ideas into a simple design, accompanied by a 60-second video pitch. Whether it’s an inventive product, a cutting-edge service, or a solution to a pressing challenge, this competition provides students a platform to bring their ideas to life. Students will compete in categories such as Consumer Goods & Services, Business Goods & Services, Trades & Technology Operations, Social Innovation, and Health, Clean Technologies, & Life Sciences.
“The Back of the Napkin Challenge is an incredible opportunity for students to turn their ideas into actionable plans,” said Jeremy Barron, Director of the Halloran Lab for Entrepreneurship at Colby College. “It encourages students to embrace innovative thinking, refine their communication skills, and take the first steps toward becoming successful entrepreneurs. The finalists will pitch their ideas to a prestigious panel of judges, including Bill Carr, former VP of Digital Media at Amazon and author of *Working Backwards*; Margaret McFadden, Provost and Dean of Faculty at Colby CollegeElizabeth Fortin, Director of Workforce Development at Kennebec Valley Community College; and Luke Shorty, Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives at Thomas College. Carr will not only serve as a judge but will also share insights from his leadership experience at Amazon.
Kim Kennedy, a business administration instructor at KVCC, noted the unique learning experience the competition offers: “This challenge gives students a rare chance to move from idea to action in a supportive environment. Accelerator Program awarded $150,000 in prize money for equitable access to entrepreneurship
Washington, D.C., Waterville, ME 10/15/2024 – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced Dirigo Labs as one of forty-four Stage Two winners for the 2024 Growth Accelerator Fund Competition (GAFC). The Waterville-based accelerator will receive a $150,000 cash prize for its work as a Growth Accelerator Partnership in supporting the launch, growth, and scale of STEM/Research and Development (R&D)-focused small businesses in the sustainability and biotechnology sectors.

The Halloran Lab $40K Venture Showcase provided an exciting platform for innovators to compete for substantial funding. Mawjam Energy Analytics secured the first-place prize of $25,000, Pachyceph earned the second-place prize of $12,500, and Good Balance received the Audience Choice award of $2,500. In total, $40,000 in funding was awarded to support these promising ventures.

Following Colby’s showcase, the “Top Gun Regional Pitch” for Waterville took place on May 8th at Thomas College. Among the standout participants, Scrapdogs Compost and Watermelon Pie emerged as winners. Both companies went on to participate in the Maine Center for Entrepreneurs statewide showcase in Portland, Maine, further highlighting their innovative solutions and entrepreneurial spirit.
“We are particularly proud of the innovative solutions and entrepreneurial spirit showcased at the Maine Center for Entrepreneurs Top Gun regional showcase in Waterville,” said Kerry Smart, program coordinator for the Harold Alfond Institute for Business Innovation and the Office of Professional and Career Development at Thomas College. “They exemplify our commitment to nurturing a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem in our region.”
Dirigo Labs hosted its pitch competition on May 22 at Greene Block + Studios, featuring 12 startups with innovations in cleantech, medtech, AI, and manufacturing. At the accelerator’s third pitch competition in Waterville, Finsulate emerged as the winner, securing the $25,000 prize. Finsulate creates sustainably responsible foul release wrap to replace anti-fouling paint on boats, docks, buoys, and other objects in the ocean. Additionally, all of the graduating Dirigo Labs companies were provided with an award package, which included a 2-year membership of office facilities in downtown Waterville’s Brick Coworking & Innovation Space and a 1-year membership to the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce.

On May 29th, Kennebec Valley Community College hosted its Entrepreneurship Pitch Night at King Hall, providing a platform for local Maine businesses to fine-tune their pitches and showcase months of work on their business ideas. Among the winners were Vacationland Vans, offering adventure travel van rentals to enjoy the Maine outdoors with an exciting, low-cost outdoor experience, and Eat Neon, specializing in premium desserts and baked goods for events and special occasions.
“We are excited to support the development of these local businesses and to connect them with their next steps towards growth,” stated Joe Musumeci, KVCC’s director of workforce training and professional development. “This was our first pitch event, and we were extremely impressed with the professionalism and polish of all our businesses that presented.”
The series culminated with Main Street Skowhegan’s Business Lab Pitch Contest and Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge on June 5th. 207 CPR, LLC won the Business Lab Pitch Contest prize of $5,000 with its lifesaving training services, featuring professional CPR, AED, and First Aid instruction. The high school winners included Natalie Cooke of Cooke’s Corner Jewelry, Lola Caruso of Honeybelle Crafts, and Noah McConnell of NM Car Detailing, showcasing their entrepreneurial creativity and ambition while also taking home individual cash prizes.
“It was an absolute blast facilitating Main Street Skowhegan’s 4th Business Lab & Pitch Contest and collaborating with Aspire Riverhawks and MSAD 54 to pilot the ‘Youth
Entrepreneur Challenge,” stated Skowhegan Center for Entrepreneurship’s Director of Entrepreneurship Patric Moore. “These programs demonstrate the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit within Somerset County and across central Maine, proving that it’s never too early or too late to start or grow a business.”
Through these collaborative efforts, Dirigo Labs, Main Street Skowhegan, Colby College, Thomas College, and Kennebec Valley Community College demonstrated their commitment to fostering a supportive environment for business and innovation. By offering entrepreneurs and founders access to resources, mentorship, and funding opportunities, they aimed to cultivate a thriving ecosystem of innovation that drives economic growth and prosperity in Central Maine.

Waterville, ME 6/4/2024 – Finsulate secured a $25,000 prize sponsored by Skowhegan Savings Bank at the accelerator’s third pitch competition in Waterville. Finsulate creates sustainably responsible foul release wrap to replace anti-fouling paint on boats, docks, buoys, and other objects in the ocean.

The judging criteria included the company’s pitch delivery, capital strategy, innovation, team, and potential economic, environmental, or social impact. The 16-week program guided startups through a targeted curriculum to execute their project plans, and each cohort company worked with a curated board of local and national mentors from various industries. Seminar topics included utilizing public-private sector grants and economic incentives, customer acquisition strategies, capital planning, and intellectual property evaluation.

Accelerator Program was awarded $50,000 in prize money for equitable access to entrepreneurship
Washington, D.C., Waterville, ME 5/14/2024 – The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced Dirigo Labs as a Stage One winner for the 2024 Growth Accelerator Fund Competition (GAFC). Dirigo Labs will receive a $50,000 cash prize for its impactful and inclusive approach to nurturing a collaborative national innovation ecosystem to advance small business research and development (R&D) from ideas to the market.
By fostering connections between entrepreneurs, mentors, partners, philanthropies, corporations, investors, and other shared resources, GAFC 2024 catalyzes strategic ecosystem partnerships to build community and organizational capacity for the successful launch, growth, and scale of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)-based entrepreneurs.
Dirigo Labs will launch an economic initiative to support emerging biotech and sustainability sectors, catalyzing rural revitalization and the post mill and manufacturing economy. Using a ‘cohort within a cohort‘ strategy, Dirigo Labs aims to build a resilient technology ecosystem additionally leading to targeted growth in mentorship, investments, startups, entrepreneurs, and jobs.
