No cost startups, 10-week program invites Maine’s earliest-stage founders to test a brand-new idea, talk to real customers and pitch on Demo Day — no product, revenue or co-founder required.
WATERVILLE, Maine — August 4, 2026 — Dirigo Labs is now enrolling for the 2026 Dirigo Launch Incubator, a no cost, 10-week program built for Maine founders who have a brand-new idea and the drive to test it. The cohort runs September 15 through November, pairing twice-weekly workshops with hands-on mentorship and culminating in a public Demo Day in downtown Waterville.
Dirigo Launch is the idea-stage front door to Dirigo Labs’ programs, and it is designed to meet founders exactly where they start: with a hunch, a problem worth solving and a lot of questions. Over 10 weeks, participants engage directly with potential customers, interview real customers, shape a business model and value proposition, and build an investor-ready pitch, guided every step by experienced founders, operators and mentors from across Maine’s startup ecosystem.
Dirigo Launch is built for the very earliest stage. There is no requirement for a finished product, revenue or even a co-founder — only an idea and a willingness to put it in front of real customers. The program welcomes first-time founders, students, researchers, side-hustlers and Main Street entrepreneurs across sustainability, biotech, software and other research-driven fields. Pre-product and pre-revenue teams are not just allowed — they are exactly who the program is for.
Accepted founders get a structured, supportive runway to turn that raw idea into something tested and fundable:
Founders should plan for roughly four to six hours per week, including customer interviews and homework between sessions, and accepted companies also gain access to Bricks Coworking & Innovation Space in downtown Waterville.
“Dirigo Launch meets founders the moment they have an idea — before the product, before the revenue, before they have it all figured out,” said Jeff Frank, program manager at Dirigo Labs. “Our whole job is to get founders talking to customers fast, testing their assumptions, and walking away with the evidence and confidence to take the next step. You bring the idea; we’ll help you test it.”
For founders building R&D-driven or deep-tech ventures, Dirigo Launch also opens a door to non-dilutive capital. As the federally designated Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) resource in Maine, the Central Maine Growth Council and Dirigo Labs help participants understand and begin pursuing these federal grants, highly competitive programs that fund innovative small businesses without taking equity. Founders exploring these opportunities get early, practical guidance on whether their idea is a fit and how to position it for a competitive application.
